Big Ideas, Real Impact.

The Joyful Psych welcomes assessment enquiries from schools, parents and referring professionals who are seeking a clearer understanding of a child or young person’s learning, attention, behaviour, social communication, emotional regulation or developmental profile.

We work collaboratively with families and, where appropriate, schools and other professionals to gather relevant background information and understand how a child is functioning across different settings. This helps ensure the assessment process is meaningful, practical and focused on the child’s individual strengths and support needs.

Referrals may come from:

  • Schools and learning support teams

  • GPs

  • Paediatricians

  • Psychologists

  • Psychiatrists

  • Allied health professionals

  • Parents or carers seeking further clarity

An assessment may be helpful when there are concerns about a child’s learning, development, attention, behaviour or emotional wellbeing.

Common referral reasons include:

  • Difficulties with reading, writing, spelling or maths

  • Uneven academic progress or concerns about learning development

  • Difficulty focusing, staying on task or completing work

  • Organisation, planning or executive functioning challenges

  • Impulsivity, hyperactivity or frequent distractibility

  • Social communication differences

  • Emotional regulation difficulties

  • Sensory processing differences

  • Concerns regarding Autism or ADHD

  • Possible specific learning disorders, including dyslexia, dysgraphia or

    dyscalculia

  • Requests for diagnostic clarification or school-based planning support

The Joyful Psych’s current assessment services include autism assessments, ADHD assessments and psychoeducational assessments for school-aged children and adolescents.

The Joyful Psych offers a range of child and adolescent assessment services designed to provide clarity, practical recommendations and a better understanding of each child’s unique profile.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessments

Autism assessments may be suitable where there are noticable differences relating to communication, play, social interaction, emotional regulation or sensory processing. The assessment process is designed to be warm, developmentally appropriate and engaging for neurodivergent children.

ADHD Assessments

ADHD assessments may be appropriate where there are concerns about attention, impulse control, hyperactivity, organisation, emotional regulation or difficulty following instructions and completing tasks. These assessments help families and schools better understand how attention and executive functioning challenges may be affecting a child across settings.

Psychoeducational Assessments

Psychoeducational assessments investigate cognitive ability and academic achievement. They may assist in identifying possible neurodevelopmental disorders, specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia, and other factors that may be affecting learning and school performance.

Reports are written clearly and are designed to be useful for families, schools and other professionals involved in the child’s care.

Depending on the type of assessment completed, reports may include:

  • Relevant developmental, educational and referral background

  • Information gathered from parents, carers and, where appropriate, teachers

  • Summary of assessment tools and questionnaires used

  • Assessment findings and interpretation

  • The child’s strengths and areas of difficulty

  • Diagnostic impressions, where appropriate

  • Practical recommendations for home, school and other support settings

  • Strategies to assist planning, learning support and advocacy

  • Recommendations for further supports or referrals, where relevant

The goal is to provide a report that is clear, practical and helpful for supporting the child across home, school and community environments. The Joyful Psych’s current assessment process includes comprehensive reports and report feedback sessions.

Schools and referring professionals are welcome to contact The Joyful Psych to discuss whether an assessment may be appropriate.

When making an enquiry, it is helpful to include:

  • The child’s age and year level

  • The main areas of concern

  • Relevant school observations or learning support concerns

  • Any previous assessments or diagnoses, if known

  • The type of assessment being considered, if known
